Texas Democrat James Talarico is gaining momentum after Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton secured the GOP nomination for the U.S. Senate, setting up one of the most closely watched races of the 2026 election cycle.

Following Paxton’s primary victory, Talarico’s campaign reported a major fundraising boost, collecting approximately $600,000 within hours. Democratic strategists believe Paxton’s legal controversies and polarizing political image could create an opportunity for Democrats in a state that has long leaned Republican.

Talarico, a Texas state representative, is positioning himself as a moderate and independent candidate capable of appealing to Democrats, independents, and disaffected Republicans. He has emphasized his bipartisan legislative record, including efforts related to property tax relief, teacher pay increases, affordable housing, child care costs, and prescription drug affordability.

The Democrat has also highlighted his willingness to challenge members of his own party on issues such as border security and energy policy, arguing that Texas voters want practical leadership rather than partisan politics.

Republicans, however, are already launching aggressive attacks against Talarico, portraying him as too progressive for Texas voters. Conservative groups aligned with former President Donald Trump have begun targeting his social and cultural positions in early campaign messaging.

Despite Talarico’s strong fundraising numbers, political analysts caution that previous Texas Democrats, including Beto O’Rourke, also raised substantial amounts of money but failed to win statewide office.

Recent polling from Democratic-aligned groups suggests the race could be competitive, with Talarico attempting to build a broad coalition of young voters, independents, Black and Latino communities, and moderate Republicans ahead of the November election.
